Nuclear Power: Pros and Cons

This covers the main pros and cons that leave nuclear power a controversial way to obtain energy.

Nuclear power, or the use of sustained “nuclear fission or nuclear fusion” to generate heat, has interesting benefits and setbacks, making it different from the other methods of generating energy. Presently, the legitimacy of nuclear energy has been very controversial. Nuclear energy is used in 6% of the world’s energy today, and about 14% of the world’s electricity.

In order to produce this type of energy, change in the nuclei structure of the atoms has to take place before product is possible. Nuclear fission is the process where the nuclei of atoms are split, causing energy to release. A classic example of nuclear fission is releasing of the atomic bomb. In nuclear fusion, the nuclei of atoms are fused together. This is found in the world’s most powerful bomb, the Hydrogen Bomb. Nuclear reactors are used to create nuclear energy, but not for bombs, for house electricity, and energy in general.

There are many pros and cons that determine people’s views on how efficient nuclear energy can be. One advantage that nuclear energy has, is when coal and oil run out, it’s one of the few remaining ways to produce electricity. Also, well-operated nuclear power plants do not release toxins into the environment, like other sources of energy. Finally, nuclear power plants require much less fuel than other sources of energy.

Despite these facts that make nuclear energy seem necessary, an example of the negative effects are nuclear explosions, which can make people very sick, or kill people, and leaves thousands with cancer in later years of their lives. One of the worst tragedies is called a Meltdown, where the fission reactor goes out of control and emits crazy amounts of toxic radiation. Also, the nuclear waste that is always produced when making nuclear energy emits dangerous radiation. The waste cannot be thrown away like normal trash and has to be placed in special waste rooms.

When the core of the nuclear reactor overheats, it damages the core, which causes the explosion during a Meltdown. When the heat generated from a reactor goes higher than the heat removed by the cooling systems, it leads to the point where at least one nuclear fuel element exceeds the melting point, which then triggers the meltdown.

This is what starts all the controversy, because obviously many people would not want to work in a nuclear power plant after hearing story after story of explosive accidents, and cancer patients. The bottom line, is that all methods of man-made energy production have serious impacts on the environment, which leaves nuclear power an ideal method, if done right. Many think we can have enough experience that it can always be done right, which would lead to an environment friendly source of energy, and could have the potential to top all the other clean ways of obtaining energy.
